Q: What is your favorite chess opening?
A: I have played many over the years, but these days I enjoy the Queen's Gambit.
Christopher Toolin was born in Providence, RI and learned to move the chess pieces around age 5. However, chess remained 'just a game' until age 10 when an afterschool program paired him with his future coach and mentor, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun. With only six years age difference between them, Chris grew quickly under Jorge's tutelage eventually earning Scholastic Championships at the State, New England, and National levels. In 2001, as Pan-American Co-Champion Chris was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas to play for their prestigious chess team. In 2007 he earned the National Master title, while graduating from UT Dallas in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Although still an active competitor, Chris has found time to grow his successful teaching business over the past ten years into what is now the NTCA.
Q: Who is your favorite chess player?
A: Again there are many choices, but of course Bobby Fischer comes to mind.
Q: What is your most memorable chess moment?
A: Being Co-Champion of the Pan-American Scholastic tournament with one of my best friends, Ryan Milisits. We were both awarded full scholarships to UT Dallas, and I remember our Moms were both in tears.
Q: What is the best lesson you have learned
A: Never give up!
